🌋 Explore Newberry Volcanic National Monument

Otherworldly obsidian flows and lava caves.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a still-active volcanic complex with two crater lakes (Paulina and East), the Big Obsidian Flow (a 7,000-year-old river of glass), and the Lava Lands Visitor Center. The obsidian flow is one of the most unusual short hikes in Oregon — you walk on volcanic glass.

Good to know

  • $5/day vehicle pass at the Visitor Center.
  • Obsidian is sharp — wear closed shoes.
  • Caldera road typically opens mid-May through October.
